I wanted to write about this experience for quite some time, but for some reason or another I have not had a chance to do it. Every time I travel to a new country where I haven’t been before, I first search to see if there are any Kosher restaurants to be visited!

This past summer while on vacation in Costa Rica, I made one of the most amazing Kosher discoveries in recent memory — at least in my own recent memory. There is a Kosher Burger King in San Jose, Costa Rica! Who knew?

With the help of a GPS and much luck, we ventured to find the Kosher Burger King. This was an incredible experience because there are no street numbers in Costa Rica. That’s right — absolutely not a single street number to be found, so if you don’t know where you are going, it is very easy to lose your way.

We arrived at a small shopping center in a suburb of San Jose to find a sight that seemed to be a mirage — a Kosher Burger King! It was not big but it was just perfect!

Whoppers, fries and more important chicken tenders — Kosher establishments speak volumes about a community. Costa Rica has a very small Jewish population. Many mid-size North American cities have way more Jews than San Jose and absolutely no Kosher restaurants.

A community that understands Kashrut as a basic principle in Judaism is way ahead of the game. Knowing that no matter how small you are in numbers you must still support the opening and upkeep of Kosher establishments is very important when it comes to sending a message about the survival of The Jewish People. Having said that, I urge you to support our local Kosher restaurants here in Las Vegas. It says a lot about us, too!
